Massive Explosion In Colchester
Well when I say 'Colchester' I mean in a small office just outside.

And when I say 'massive explosion' I mean I have shin splints - it's just tat a thread titled 'Shin Splints' is likely to have less people open it.

So...Shin Splints. Who has had them? What are your remedies. I have the London 10k to complete on sunday in prep for the London Marathon in a couple of months and i'm in agony.

Thanks muchly for your wisdom and/or wit

Mr P... rest done fuck all for me... was told if I was a pro athelete/footballer I could have had a op (fuse the muscle onto the back of the shin bone or something??) ... but as I wasn't I was fucked.... for me it was a case of management for the next 12 years or so... completely cut out road running... and wore innersolses that took 70% of the impact of pounding on the floor... even then playing football on rock hard pictures in Sept/Oct it could be fucking agony... rest done nothing for me

Another question for those saying I should rest.

How do you know when you have had enough rest?

I ran Monday night and got pain, hurt all day Tuesday when I tried to stretch, Wednesday too but was easing. Hurt when I ran on Weds but have had no pain since stopping on Weds.

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester
No remedy for shin splints except rest.
Common injury in infantry training...weak lower legs and running don't mix well.
Hope you keep suffering.

Don't play it down Mr P - I heard it here in Highwoods!

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester
I occasionally get shin-splint type pains. I do a lot of walking/hiking and I got them quite bad when I was on a walking weekend in Cumbria last year. I over-pronate and have orthotics, which is mainly to combat a knee problem that flares up when I do too much and shin-splints is another consequence of that, apparently!

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester
I tried compression socks which helped a lot.Cheap remedy if it works as there only 15/20 quid. Also get your running gait analysed, small things can make a huge difference when doing long distances.

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester
I used to have them for a few years.

Bloody excruciating.

Turns out it was a mixture of shoes and trainers that were ill fitting (too big) plus my route to and from work meant walking up a bloody steep hill.

As soon as I moved house, and got new footwear, it stopped over night.

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester
I tend to get new shoes every 300 miles.

Once you've rested and are up and running again, try alternating the side of the road you run on. Pavements and roads are often sloped, so you end up working one leg more than the other.

Good luck, I fucking hate being injured.

Self indulgent wankers is what they are lowermarsh

Rest is all well and good, I'm pretty awesome with that part of my training, but I still need to train... So how do you get the balance?

I will get my running style checked and my running shoes too.

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester
Shin splints are only cured by rest.
You will need new shoes fitted properly in a running shop of course.

Never got my head round non-runners who decide to start with a marathon.

I've been running for over a decade now and will never feel the need to run more than 6 or 7 miles tops.

Anything longer and I'm soon on the road to injuryville.

Did the Brighton Marathon in 2013. Great experience and glad I did it but think that one is enough for me.

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester
The reason given for only going up to 18-20 miles in training is that the extra 6-8 miles puts so much stress on your body, that it can knock you off of trainig for a number of days after which has an overall detrimental effect.

That isn't the reason i won't be doing it though - my reason is because I fucking hate running

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester

Runners have no reason to be smug.
Long-distance running is certainly not good for your body in the long run. No pun intended.

Re: Massive Explosion In Colchester

I was well through 10 miles by now.

Depends how you want to get on I suppose as some 'plans' say to only go up to 18 miles and there was no way I was leaving 8 miles unanswered for on the day.

Now i've never run a marathon, and I dare say I ever will... However i've done my fair share of short distance running and 8 miles is a distance.

I've never understood the only train up to 18 miles... I'd want to know in my head that I could cover the distance.
